Wordless Novels ​ Wordless novels originated from expressionist movement of the early Twentieth century. Most storylines followed paths of social injustice, and typically involved the struggles of a common man as he attempted to flee the crushing weight of capitalism. More times than not, the dramatic journey ended with the recapture of the rebel, and a harsh punishment administered by a soulless system. Aside from novelty of storytelling without language barriers, the most striking aspect of these books was their appearance. Primarily comprised from wood etchings, the black and white images created dark moods, and gave a true sense of the oppression surrounding the hero. Unfortunately the popularity of this craft waned in the Thirties, and aside from a few minor resurgences, the genre remains unknown by most.
